Introduction: A Changing America
The story is set in the year 1911, a time when the Wild West is slowly disappearing. New laws, trains, and government agents are replacing cowboys, outlaws, and lawless towns.
You play as John Marston, a former outlaw who left his criminal life behind to live peacefully with his wife Abigail and son Jack. However, the U.S. government wants him to do one last job — and they’re forcing him to do it by taking his family away.
To get them back, John must hunt down and bring to justice the three men he once rode with in an outlaw gang: Bill Williamson, Javier Escuella, and Dutch van der Linde.
Chapter 1: New Austin and the Hunt for Bill Williamson
John’s journey begins in New Austin, where he arrives by train in the small town of Armadillo. He rides to Fort Mercer, where Bill Williamson is hiding with his gang. John tries to talk to Bill, hoping to avoid violence. But Bill shoots him and leaves him to die.
John is found and rescued by a local rancher named Bonnie MacFarlane. She takes him to her ranch, where he recovers and starts helping out with chores like herding cattle and guarding the land. Through Bonnie, John meets Marshal Leigh Johnson, the lawman of Armadillo.
To take down Bill Williamson, John joins forces with some unusual characters:
- Nigel West Dickens, a traveling medicine salesman and con artist
- Seth Briars, a treasure hunter obsessed with digging up graves
- Irish, a drunken arms dealer
With their help and the support of the local marshal, John leads an assault on Fort Mercer. The gang fights its way in, but Bill escapes into Mexico. John now has to cross the border to continue his mission.
Chapter 2: Chaos in Mexico
John enters Nuevo Paraíso, a region in Mexico that is caught in a civil war. The government, led by Colonel Agustín Allende, is fighting a rebellion led by Abraham Reyes, a young revolutionary.
John works with both sides, trying to find out where Bill and Javier are hiding. Allende promises to help John, but later betrays him. He tries to kill John and his local ally Luisa Fortuna, a woman loyal to the revolution. Luisa dies, and John realizes he has to switch sides.
With help from Reyes and his rebels, John storms the government strongholds. He kills Allende and finally finds Bill Williamson, killing him during the attack. He also captures Javier Escuella, who tries to explain that Dutch was always the one in control of the gang. John turns Javier over to the American authorities.
Having dealt with two of his former gang members, John heads back to the United States to face the man who once meant the most to him: Dutch van der Linde.
Chapter 3: Dutch and the End of the Gang
John is taken to the town of Blackwater, which is much more developed than the other places he’s visited. It has cars, electric lights, and modern weapons. Here, he meets Edgar Ross, the government agent who is controlling John’s mission.
Ross orders John to kill Dutch van der Linde, the last target. Dutch now leads a gang made up of outcasts and Native Americans, and he’s hiding deep in the Tall Trees forest.
John and the U.S. Army fight Dutch’s gang in several raids. Along the way, John sees how Dutch has changed. Dutch no longer believes in helping others like he once did. He is angry, violent, and paranoid. He wants to make one last stand against the government.
Eventually, John corners Dutch at the edge of a cliff. Dutch gives a speech about how the government will never stop looking for new enemies. Then he jumps to his death, ending the old gang for good.
Chapter 4: Home, Peace, and Betrayal
With his mission complete, John is finally free. He returns to his farm and reunites with Abigail and Jack. For a while, life is peaceful. The family works on the ranch, tending to cattle, fixing fences, and teaching Jack how to hunt.
But the peace doesn’t last.
One morning, government agents, led by Edgar Ross, arrive at the ranch with a group of soldiers. They see John as a loose end. He is no longer useful to them, and they plan to kill him.
John realizes what is happening. He tells Abigail and Jack to escape while he stays behind. In a dramatic final moment, John opens the barn door and steps outside. He is surrounded. With no chance of survival, he draws his gun and is shot down in a storm of bullets.
Epilogue: Jack’s Revenge
Three years later, Jack Marston is now a young man. His mother has died, and he’s alone. Jack finds out that Edgar Ross, the man responsible for his father’s death, is retired and living near the San Luis River.
Jack tracks Ross down while he is fishing. The two men argue. Jack challenges Ross to a duel and kills him, ending the story with revenge.
But it is a bitter victory. Jack has become the very thing his father wanted him to avoid. The cycle of violence continues.
